What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that deals with tooth alignment and adjustment. With proper orthodontics we can prevent and correct misaligned teeth. It is beneficial for those who suffer from a variety of different dental problems.

These can include:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Gaps in the teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Open bite
  • Cross bite
  • Misaligned teeth or jaw

Orthodontic procedures can benefit both the functionality of your bite, as well as aesthetics. A smooth, even smile is beautiful as well as functional. Orthodontic treatments align your bite, they can improve speech problems caused by misaligned teeth. They also make eating and chewing much easier and safer for your mouth and jaw bone.

What Causes Orthodontic Issues?

Nutritional Disorders. Individuals who do not have adequate nutrition will experience volumetric shrinkage of the jaw and face, and the fact that they will not find the place in the small jaws of the normal cubicle will result in chaos, rotations, or even embedding.

Breathing in the mouth. Chronic inflammation and similar causes, if continued for a long time, the tonsils may grow to an extreme extent. In this case, the airways become narrow and the breathing becomes difficult. In order to be able to defeat this difficulty and to enlarge the air passageway in that region, it is obliged to take the child’s lower jaw and its associated language.

If this situation continues for a long time, the position of the lower jaw is set to the forward position. The tongue comes in between the front teeth and if the teeth interfere with the sliding, it comes to the open closing. If the patient can not breathe, there is a negative effect on the growth potential of the upper jaw.

Finger Absorption. A newborn baby has a highly developed suction mechanism. A baby whose sucking instinct is not satisfied gets some habits to get rid of this need. This habit is not usually seen in children who are fed with breast milk for 9-18 months.

Research has shown that fingerprints develop in the first few weeks of life, depending on hunger. It can be thought that this habit helped to get dental because the pain caused by local irritations during the period when the teeth started to run can be removed by finger suction. Finger absorption decreases with age.

In general, if finger absorption continues after 3.5 years of age, treatment should be started. According to the number and the number of the sucked finger, the child who moves this habit will move in the upper and lower teeth in the area of influence and the closing irregularities will be seen.

Pseudo-pacifier. It is not harmful to suck a pacifier with physiological characteristics until age 1.5. It is even useful to prevent the child from getting a bad habit like finger sucking. When pacifiers are used continuously, they cause irregularities and various closing disorders in those areas because they will make long-term abnormal effects on the tissues in the affected areas.

Bedding Shape. The bedding shape determines the position of the lying bed of the lower jaw. This gives us information about the position of the lower jaw on average 8 hours a day. For example, the position of the lower jaw is different in a child with a lying face and a child lying on the back. Orthodontic problems may arise for people who are habitually lying on the same side of the bed and putting their hand or fist face down between the face and the pillow.

Types Of Orthodontic Procedures

Braces

Braces are an excellent option to form and align your teeth, and they are still an extremely common procedure. Traditional Metal Braces consist of standard metal brackets that are adhered to your teeth with an adhesive and connected by wire. They require periodic tightening so pressure can gradually straighten your teeth and align your jaw as needed. While metal braces brackets are still the most common, other treatment options are available today.

Invisalign

Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements our orthodontist plans out for you.

There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.

Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical Orthodontics involves orthognathic surgery and is done to correct misalignments or other abnormalities in the upper jaw and lower jaws. For this type of orthodontics, we work closely with an oral surgeon to create a treatment plan. This surgery and orthodontic treatment solution can help improve speech, breathing, chewing and appearance.

Orthognathic surgery can involve surgical procedures such as an osteotomy (bone cutting), bone grafts, or distraction osteogenesis (stretching of the bone) and orthodontic (braces) care. Orthognathic correction is conducted in stages, and the course of treatment can last a few months up to one year or more.
